Avoiding The Silent Killer – Heat Stress

Working on hot days can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke Extreme heat is a significant risk to Canadians, especially seniors, children, and those with chronic illness. Surprisingly, it’s estimated that  120 people die each year  in Toronto, from conditions caused by exposure to extreme heat. Extreme heat is called the ‘silent killer’ because it’s not a visible environmental threat like a fire or flood.

With summer is in full swing, temperatures are rising, and we are spending more and more time outside, which means we need to be on the lookout for heat stress, or heat-related illnesses. Continue reading Avoiding The Silent Killer – Heat Stress

Working From Heights Training Requirement Extended

Workers who use fall protection on a construction project must take an approved ‘working at heights’ training program.

The training is in the Occupational Health and Safety Awareness and Training Regulation, and is on top of the training requirements under the Construction Regulation.

The training applies to workers who face a hazard from working at heights and use fall protection on construction projects such as:

  • Travel restraint systems
  • Fall restricting systems
  • Fall arrest systems
  • Safety nets
  • Work belts / safety belts

The Ministry of Labour has extended the deadline for the training requirement to October 1st, for experienced workers meeting the following criteria.

1. Have completed fall protection training prior to April 1, 2015

2. Currently enrolled in a Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) approved working at heights training program scheduled to be completed before October 1st

‘Construction activity’ can occur in any industry in connection with a project. For example the installation of a new piece of equipment, structural maintenance, renovation, or repair, clearing of land. It doesn’t matter what sector the business is in, constructor type work is considered construction activity, and the Working at Heights Standard applies.

FAST Rescue provides a Working from Heights training program that teaches workers to recognize fall hazards and apply the proper safety measures.

We also instruct operators how to efficiently work on platforms and reduce injury risk and equipment damage.

Other areas of training include: precautions for lifting, fall arrest personal protective, how to properly inspect equipment, size adjusting harnesses & lanyards, and legal requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

The FAST Rescue Working from Heights Training Program meets the 2015 Ontario training requirements. The training session is 8 hours and certification is good for 3 years.

“In recent years, the Ontario government has imposed several new mandatory training requirements on employers carrying on business in Ontario.

As an employment lawyer who advises employers of all sizes I see that employers are finding it increasingly difficult to keep up to date on these obligations.

This blog summarizes some of the mandatory training requirements that are set out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
