WHAT IS A MINOR SPILL?

A spill that does not cause significant adverse effects or public concern, where the company can, utilizing its resources, undertake the necessary measures to control, contain, and clean up the material spilled.

A minor spill must meet all of the following criteria:

  • The responsible party is at the scene.
  • The spill commodity is known.
  • The spilled commodity is not highly toxic.
  • The quantity of the spill is small.
  • There is no possibility of fire or explosion.
  • The spill is completely contained within a building.
  • There is no potential for the spilled material to get into the environment.
  • The spill is not in a high-traffic area or a danger to the public.
  • Specialized PPE is not required to clean up the spill.

MINOR SPILL RESPONSE PROCEDURE

  • Notify all employees or customers in the immediate area.
  • Seek medical attention for those who may be injured or exposed.
  • Identify the spilled commodity.
  • Review and clean up the spill following the SDS.
  • Put up signage.
  • Ventilate area as required after cleanup.
  • Replenish the spill kit and return it to the appropriate location.

AFTER CLEAN UP

  • Dispose of soiled clean up products properly.
  • Investigate to determine the root cause.
    • Could the spill have been avoided?
    • Are there changes in the work procedures that will prevent a recurrence?
    • Did the spill response plan work as intended?
    • How can spill responders be more prepared in the future?
