What Is Advanced Marine First Aid?

Advanced Marine First Aid is a 4-day, hands-on first aid course built specifically for people who work on boats and vessels. It covers everything from CPR to managing serious injuries, all in a marine setting where help is not just around the corner.

The course meets the requirements set out by Transport Canada (TP 13008E), the federal standard for marine first aid training in Canada. It is also aligned with the STCW Convention, the international standard for seafarer training and certification.

This is not a regular workplace first aid course. It goes deeper, covering scenarios and skills specific to life and work at sea.

What you get when you finish:

  • 3-year Transport Canada certification in Marine Advanced First Aid
  • Recognized across Canada for vessel compliance and officer endorsements

What Will You Learn?

This course covers a wide range of first aid skills, all taught with a focus on real marine situations. Here is what is included:

Emergency response basics:

  • How to manage an emergency scene safely
  • Patient assessment – checking and prioritizing who needs help first
  • Preventing the spread of illness and disease on board

Life-saving skills:

  • Breathing emergencies and airway management
  • CPR and circulation emergencies
  • Bleeding control and wound care
  • Treating shock

Injuries and illness:

  • Soft tissue injuries (cuts, burns, bruises)
  • Bone and joint injuries (fractures, dislocations)
  • Head, neck, and spine injuries
  • Chest, stomach, and pelvis injuries
  • Sudden illness — heart attack, stroke, seizures, diabetic emergencies

Marine-specific topics:

  • Heat stroke and hypothermia at sea
  • Cold water emergencies
  • Poisoning – swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through skin contact
  • Toxicological hazards found on ships
  • Moving and rescuing injured people in tight spaces
  • What to do in a multiple-casualty emergency
  • How to communicate with shore-based medical professionals by radio
  • Basic pharmacology (medications used on board)
  • Sterilization and infection control on a vessel

By the end of the course, you will be prepared to handle a wide range of medical emergencies, even when you are hours away from the nearest hospital.

Frequently Asked Questions About Advanced Marine First Aid in North York

How much does the Advanced Marine First Aid course cost in North York?

The course costs $600.00 + applicable tax per person. That includes all four days of training, hands-on practice, and your Transport Canada certification when you pass. Need to train a group? Contact us for a custom group rate.

Do I need this certification by law?

If you are designated as the first aid person on a vessel travelling in near-coastal waters (Class 1) or on the open ocean, you need this certification under Transport Canada rules. It is also required if you are working toward a Master or Officer certificate or endorsement. If you are not sure whether this applies to you, give us a call. We are happy to help.

What is the difference between Marine Basic and Advanced Marine First Aid?

Marine Basic First Aid is a 2-day course for vessels on calmer, closer-to-shore waters. Advanced Marine First Aid is a 4-day course (31 hours) for vessels on the open ocean or longer offshore voyages. It covers more complex injuries, marine-specific hazards, radio medical advice, and pharmacology, which are not covered in the same depth in the basic course.

Can I renew or recertify my Advanced Marine First Aid certificate?

No. This is a federal rule set by Transport Canada. When your 3-year certificate expires, you need to take the full course again. There is no short refresher option. We recommend booking your next course before your certificate expires so there is no gap in your certification.

How long is the course and what are the hours?

The course runs for 4 full days, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day, totalling around 31 hours. It is held at our North York training centre at 750 Oakdale Rd., Suite 56. Free parking is included.

What do I need to pass the course?

To get your certificate, you need to:

  • Attend 100% of the course (all 4 days)
  • Pass the written exam with at least 80%
  • Successfully demonstrate the practical skills

If you miss any of these requirements, you will need to retake the course.

Can my company book a private group session?

Yes. We offer private Advanced Marine First Aid training for companies and vessel operators who need to certify multiple people. We can run the session at our North York facility or come to your site. Email us at info@fast-rescue.com to get a quote.

What certifications will I receive after the course?

You will receive a Transport Canada certification in Marine Advanced First Aid, valid for 3 years. This certification is recognized across Canada and satisfies Transport Canada TP 13008E requirements for vessel compliance and officer endorsements.

Is there a minimum age to take this course?

Yes. You must be at least 18 years old to register. There are no other prerequisites — you do not need any prior first aid certification to take this course.

Is the course approved by Transport Canada?

Yes. F.A.S.T. Rescue's Advanced Marine First Aid course fully meets the requirements of Transport Canada Transport Publication TP 13008E, the national standard for marine first aid training in Canada.
