The season of cold weather and snow is quickly approaching. With the first snow fall already behind us, we need to think about if we are all ready to face the treacherous weather that is about to come our way. There are multiple things that need to be winterized and prepared before the snow and ice comes. One of the most important safety measures that needs to be addressed before the winter weather begins is preparing your vehicle, ensuring that it is ready to take on the harsh weather of ice and snow. But how do you do that? Listed below are a few tips and tricks on how to prepare your vehicle for the winter.
Make sure that your vehicle has the appropriate tires on that can tackle the snow and ice. This is important because some tires are only tested and approved for summer driving. The tread on summer tires don’t grip the road as much as winter tires do, making them the optimal and safer choice for winter driving. Not to mention, your car insurance rates decrease when you change your summer tires over to winter tires. Unfortunately, some tires, such as some all-season tires, will not count as a winter and summer tire to your insurance company. Talk to your insurance company to make sure that your tires are winter-driving approved.
It wouldn’t hurt to take your car into your local mechanic for a check-up or tune-up while you are getting your winter tires changed. Making sure all, if any, problems are addressed before before the bad weather comes could be a real life saver, literally. You do not want to deal with a car issue in the winter, let alone, the issue is too far gone and creates problems while you are driving.
Be sure to pack your vehicle with all necessary first aid kits and materials needed in case of an emergency. You make already keep a standard first aid kit in your vehicle, which is great and very important. But during the winter, there are a few other items you should include to your vehicle safety regime. Along with a vehicle first aid kit you should have a shovel (portable or a smaller one) in case you were to ever need to dig your vehicle out of the snow or assist others, booster cables, pylons and an extra cell phone charger in case you were ever to get stuck in the snow, in an accident, or your vehicle broke down. The worst thing to happen is not have a working cell phone in an emergency.
These tips are really important for all motorists, including commercial vehicles and transport trucks. If you have other items on your winter preparation list, be sure to add these to it.
