Would you like to cost your company $60,000 by failing to comply with safety orders? Probably not, right?
One coffee shop operator in Stittsville, Ontario, did just that in 2017. In response to an incident, a inspector visited the shop – all pretty routine.
When the inspector visited the shop, he realized that a few of the shop’s safety standards weren’t quite up to code. Unfortunate, but again, not all-together unusual or out of place.
The inspector issued fifteen orders in all, and even sent a package of small tools to help the business start to get its shop more up to code. Halfway through the year, though, not all of those orders were met. The inspector visited again, and gave more orders.
Some of those orders were simple. He wanted the shop to post the employer’s occupational health and safety policy visibly in the shop for employees to be able to see. He issued the order to conduct a workplace violence risk assessment.
He also wanted to make sure that every worker finished a occupational health and safety awareness training program, and that supervisors complete it as well.
All of these orders seems like reasonable requests to ensure that the coffee shop was running as safely as possible.
However, as of April 2018, the coffee shop closed its doors for good – it appears that the owner did not comply with these requests, and the shop was shut down.
The coffee shop operator went to trial, and he was charged $60,000 in fines for failing to comply with the orders that the inspector issued. That’s a large chunk of change to have to fork over.
Maybe he was thinking that the occupational health and safety awareness programs would be a huge drag. Maybe he thought that they really weren’t necessary, or would cost too much money to go through.
We take the Occupational Health and Safety Act seriously, and we’re sure after getting fined $60,000 that coffee shop operator thinks twice about it, too.
If that operator had known about our courses, he probably wouldn’t be in the hole by thousands of dollars – and he would still have a coffee shop to operate.
