Workplace culture is the shared environment, values, beliefs, and behaviours that shape how employees interact, collaborate, and operate within an organization. Workplace culture encompasses everything in the workplace, from leadership to communication, day-to-day operations, and your organization’s overall identity. While some components of the workplace culture may fall outside of your control, your actions and attitude can directly contribute to your workplace culture.
TIPS FOR ESTABLISHING A SUPPORTIVE WORKPLACE CULTURE
1. Treat colleagues with respect
- You spend a lot of time with your colleagues. Friendships may develop over time, but remember, you don’t need to be friends with everyone in the organization. Caring for each other and demonstrating interest in their well-being goes a long way.
Examples:
- Check in with each other after a hectic day.
- Establish a common interest, like a favourite show or sports team.
2. Support colleagues and offer kindness and compassion in times of need
- We all face challenges, whether in the workplace or at home. Support your co-workers by being
kind and compassionate, instead of judgmental or unsupportive.
Examples:
- Check in with a colleague if they are going through a hard time.
- Offer to listen or provide advice if requested.
3. Forgive mistakes and avoid assigning blame
- We are all human and will make mistakes from time to time. Avoid automatically assigning blame and punishing others.
Examples:
- Focus on the future. Use the mistake as a learning opportunity.
- Be open to feedback and try not to take it personally.
4. Work to inspire each other
We all bring something different to the workplace. Some of us are more analytical and quiet, some are outgoing and communicative. Embrace the differences and the strength this brings to the workplace.
Examples:
- Acknowledge when a colleague has done a great job.
- Share positive feedback with other departments or management.
5. Find and emphasize the meaningful aspects of your job and workplace
- A workday can feel monotonous or especially stressful. Make an effort to acknowledge the positives and the good that comes from your work.
Examples:
- A complicated issue may be collaboratively resolved.
- A client now has the goods, information or knowledge they need to fuel their day.
