Course Overview

A strong return-to-work program supports both workers and employers. It helps workers recover, reduces lost time, and supports a safe and productive return to work. This course gives workers a clear understanding of their role after a workplace injury or illness. You will learn the key steps when a workplace injury happens — from reporting the injury and getting the right treatment to taking part in return-to-work planning and modified work.

You will also learn why recovery starts right after an injury, why staying in touch with your employer is important, and how suitable work can support both your recovery and your return to your regular job.

The course covers the main tools and forms used in Ontario, including the Functional Abilities Form (FAF), modified duties, accommodation, WSIB reporting, and the responsibilities of the worker, employer, health care provider, and WSIB. At the end, you will take a short test. You need 80% to pass, and you can try again if needed.

Because return-to-work responsibilities can apply before, during, or after an injury, the course is useful for a wide range of workers and workplace roles.

Who Can Take This Course

Anyone can take this course. You do not need any previous training. It is helpful whether you have just been injured, are already in a return-to-work plan, or simply want to be ready in case something happens. This course is a good fit for:

  • Workers who have been injured or become ill at work and want to understand the next steps
  • Workers already in a return-to-work or modified work plan who want to know their rights and duties
  • New employees learning how their workplace handles injuries and recovery
  • Any worker who wants to be prepared and know what to do before an injury ever happens
  • Health and safety reps and JHSC members who support co-workers through the process
  • Supervisors and team leads who want to understand workers’ responsibilities in the return-to-work process
  • Employers who want to give staff a simple, clear course as part of their safety program

The course works for every type of workplace in Ontario — offices, stores, factories, warehouses, construction, health care, and more — because the return-to-work process applies across all industries covered by the WSIB. For individual workers, that means clearer expectations and more confidence if an injury or illness happens.

Benefits for Businesses

For employers, return-to-work training is a practical way to support recovery, reduce delays, and strengthen workplace safety practices. It helps your business:

  • Lower lost time by helping injured workers return to safe, suitable work sooner
  • Reduce claim costs that come from longer absences and slower recoveries
  • Improve cooperation by making sure workers understand their role from the start
  • Support a smoother process with fewer delays, disputes, and misunderstandings
  • Build a caring workplace culture where workers know they will be supported if they get hurt
  • Show due diligence with proof that staff have been trained on the return-to-work process
  • Train your team affordably — at $49 each and about 45 minutes per course, staff can complete the training without being away from regular work for long
  • Strengthen your safety program by adding return-to-work training alongside your other health and safety courses

Together, these benefits come from practical course content that focuses on the steps, tools, and responsibilities workers need to understand.
