Course Overview

Fire Wardens, Floor Wardens, Chief Fire Wardens, Area Wardens, and Sweepers all help people respond safely when something goes wrong at work. This course builds the knowledge and confidence they need to act quickly before, during, and after an emergency.

In about 60 minutes, you will learn how a Fire Warden team works, how fire alarms and safety systems function, when to evacuate and when to stay put, how to communicate during an emergency, and how to identify fire and safety risks early.

The course also covers other emergencies, including severe weather, floods, earthquakes, power outages, hazardous spills, and active threats, so you are prepared for more than just a fire. At the end, you complete a short test. You need 80% to pass, and you can retake the test if needed.

What Is a Fire Warden?

A Fire Warden is a workplace representative who helps people respond safely during a fire or other emergency. They guide people to the exits, check their assigned area when it is safe, support anyone who needs extra assistance, account for people at the meeting point, and provide clear information to firefighters when they arrive.

A Fire Warden is not a firefighter and should never put themselves in danger. Their role is to help people stay calm, follow the emergency plan, and evacuate safely. Some workplaces call this person a Floor Warden, Area Warden, Sweeper, or — for the whole building — a Chief Fire Warden. While the titles may differ, the core purpose is similar, and this course covers each of these roles.

Who Can Take This Course

Anyone can take this course, and no previous training or experience is required. It is a strong fit if you have been assigned a Fire Warden role, support workplace safety, supervise staff, or simply want to know what to do in an emergency. This course is helpful for:

  • Fire Wardens, Floor Wardens, and Chief Fire Wardens who have a role in their workplace fire safety plan
  • Area Wardens and Sweepers who check and clear certain areas during an evacuation
  • Emergency Response Team (ERT) members who help run the overall response
  • Supervisors and team leads who look after the safety of their floor, shift, or team
  • Property and building managers who handle fire safety in offices, stores, or buildings with many tenants
  • Health and safety staff who are building or updating their workplace’s emergency plan
  • New employees and new Wardens who need to learn the job quickly
  • Any worker who wants to know what to do in an emergency and be a helpful first point of contact

The course applies to many types of workplaces, including offices, retail stores, hospitals, hotels, factories, warehouses, construction sites, schools, and multi-tenant buildings. The basics of guiding people to safety are similar in most workplaces. One person can take it on their own, or an organization can train multiple Wardens across different floors, departments, and shifts.

Benefits for Individuals

This course helps you understand your role and feel more prepared. By the end, you will be able to:

  • Act quickly when it matters — understand the first steps to take when the alarm sounds
  • Lead people out calmly by giving clear direction during an evacuation
  • Spot risks early by identifying blocked exits, fire hazards, and unsafe areas before they become a problem
  • Speak clearly in an emergency by giving simple instructions that are easy to follow
  • Get a certificate you can keep and show your employer
  • Build leadership and people skills that also help you in your everyday job
  • Learn on your own time — finish in about an hour, at home or at work, with no class to attend

Benefits for Businesses

For an organization, training Fire Wardens is a practical, low-cost way to strengthen emergency readiness. It helps your workplace:

  • Be ready for emergencies by turning your written safety plan into clear actions your team can follow
  • Keep people and property safer — a well-run evacuation can reduce injuries, confusion, and crowding at exits
  • Reduce downtime and disruption — a fast, organized response can help control problems sooner and support a quicker return to normal operations
  • Build a stronger safety culture — trained Wardens set a positive example and help everyone take safety seriously
  • Support inspections, audits, and insurance requirements with proof that staff have completed training
  • Train as many people as you need — at $49 each and about 60 minutes per course, you can cover every floor and shift without scheduling a full-day class
  • Always have someone ready by training backups, so you are covered during vacations, staff changes, and night shifts
  • Train new Wardens quickly as people change roles, so your safety plan stays up to date all year

Because Fire Wardens are usually members of your own staff, they already know your building, its higher-risk areas, and the people who may need extra support. This course gives them the skills to use that knowledge during an emergency.

What You’ll Learn

This course covers the key topics every Fire Warden needs to know:

  • What a Fire Warden does and how they support emergency response
  • How fires start and spread, the dangers of smoke, and the different types of fire extinguishers
  • How fire alarms and safety equipment work
  • When to leave the building and when it is safer to stay put
  • How to manage the meeting point and account for everyone
  • How to help people who need extra support during an evacuation
  • How to speak clearly and work with firefighters and other responders
  • What to do during other emergencies, including severe weather, floods, earthquakes, power outages, hazardous spills, and active threats
  • How to run effective fire drills and review what happened afterward

The course focuses on practical decisions, not just facts to remember. By the end, you will know how to identify risks, decide whether to evacuate or stay put, guide people with confidence, and share useful information with firefighters.
