The New Standard for Joint Health & Safety Committee Certification Training in Ontario

The New Standard for Joint Health & Safety Committee Certification Training in Ontario

The MLITSD has released new standards for Joint Health & Safety Committee Certification Training in Ontario.  The new standard comes into effect March 1, 2016.

In Ontario, any workplace with 20 or more employees on payroll, is required by law, to have a Safety Committee.  At a minimum two members of that Committee must be Certified, one from management and one non-management.

Under Sec. 8(5) of the Act, training is required for health and safety representatives so they can effectively perform their duties. Our certification program meets this requirement and is an effective way of ensuring that all committee members and safety representatives are trained.   This program is not just for certifying JHSC members, this program can also be used for supervisor competency, demonstrating due diligence, teaching proper workplace inspections, accident investigations and more!

The MLITSD has finally released its new standards on JHSC Certification Training in Ontario. These new standards will come into effect on March 1, 2016. These new standards mean longer training time and a three year refresher required for certified committee members. The new standard has also outlined that only a small portion of your training can be completed online. For employers, this means more time away from work and less flexibility in scheduling.  If you certify before the new standard comes into effect, you will never have to re-certify again and your certification will be grandfathered under the new 2014 standard.

In order to receive your certification training under the 1996 standard, all order forms must be received no later than Jan. 15, 2016 and all training and paperwork must be completed and submitted to us before February 1, 2016. This is to allow us time to process your certification and submit to the MLITSD on time.

The Differences Between the 1996 Standard and the New 2014 Standard:

1996 Standard 2014 Standard
  • Level 1 takes approximately 8 hours to complete.
  • No expiry.
  • No timeline to complete level 2 after level 1.
  • Level 1 takes approximately 20 hours to complete.
  • Refresher is required after three years.
  • Level 2 certification must be completed within 6 months or a refresher will be required.

Benefits of registering before January 15th, 2016:

  1. No expiry on certification
  2. Less days of training (right now Level 1 is 2 days and Level 2 is 1 day.  The new standard is Level 1 = 3 days and Level 2 = 2 days)
  3.  Current standard costs less to take
